THINGS TO DO IN FREEPORT (FOR THE BEACH LOVERS)
If there is one thing that Freeport, Bahamas, has in abundance, its beautiful beaches. Beaches that perfect for commercials.
Beaches that make it really hard to leave, and beaches where you’ll find yourself as the only one there.
When trying to put together a list of things to do in Freeport, beaches are obviously at the top of your list because they are the number one reason why you would go to Freeport Bahamas in the first place.
1. PELICAN POINT BEACH
One of the more secluded beaches, Pelican Point Beach has perfect blue waters and white sand as far as the eye can see. It’s a great place to grab lunch and set up a picnic while listening to the ocean. This is one of the best Freeport excursions because you can relax and get your tan on.
2. GOLD ROCK BEACH
There’s a reason why Pirate of the Caribbean was filmed here. Grab your towel and stake your claim in the sand.
This is also the beach where most Bahamas commercials are filmed, so you know it’s perfect. This was by far the most crowded of the beaches we went to, and has 20 other people.
There is a $5 entry that covers Gold Rock Beach as part of Lucayan National Park. The fee covers Ben’s Cave, Burial Mound Cave, a mangrove boardwalk, and Gold Rock Beach.
There are composting toilets near the caves which are well maintained. While there aren’t shops for refreshments but there is a lovely lady selling cold drinks and snacks.
The walk around the cave route probably took about 15min before crossing the road to access the beach. You can choose one of two routes to the beach – one about 480m, the other is 330m.
We did a round trip and tried both routes that take you through mangroves and offer the opportunity to see some local wildlife. Be sure to head there during low tide.
3. EAST GRAND BAHAMA
This is where you go if you’re into seeing some of the most magical waters in the world. Grab a kayak and paddle over to the mysterious blue hole where you can jump in and snorkel.
We recommend using Rudy from Blue Green Outdoors as your guide.
4. LUCAYA BEACH
Sitting right in the middle of the Port Lucaya hood and across from the Port Lucaya Marketplace, this is one of the liveliest beaches on the entire island. You can find almost any water activity that you want here.

5. LUCAYAN NATIONAL PARK KAYAKING
Who knew that they would be such lush greenery right next door to the most perfect beach? But there is. And kayaking in the Lucayan National Park is one of the best ways of seeing that.
There are multiple tours that will take you there. As mentioned above there is a $5pp entry fee for the park. The fee also covers Gold Rock Beach as well as a few other sights.
6. JEEP TOUR AROUND THE ISLAND
Ever wonder how the super-rich live in the Bahamas? Yeah, us too. Take of these tours to not only drive in a Jeep with the top down (remember your sunscreen) but also check out some of the best parts of the islands (including where the rich people live).
To be honest, we’re not sure if that neighborhood is part of the actual tour or a Freeport Bahamas excursion, but it’s definitely worthwhile.
We recommend Grand Bahama Jeep Tours
7. GET YOUR SMELL ON
If you’re like us and are interested in checking out unexpected places, then we really recommend popping into the Perfume Factory located in a cute pink and white replica of an old Bahamian mansion (currently under construction).
A free tour not only takes you behind the scenes of a working fragrance production operation but also gives you the opportunity to mix your own special fragrance, bottle it and name it.
Seriously, who doesn’t want a perfume named after them?
THINGS TO DO IN FREEPORT BAHAMAS (FOR THE FOODIES)
There are so many reasons why you’d want to explore activities that don’t involve the beach (one of them could be that you got a little too burnt- like we did), but fret not- there are a ton of cool things to do in Freeport Bahamas.
8. GARDEN OF THE GROVES
The perfect place to pop and grab a bite to eat. The Garden of the Groves is like a rainforest in the middle of the island- filled with lush greenery, quaint bridges and charming shops where you stop by to pick up a souvenir or two.
9. FISH FRY
Taking place every Wednesday, a fish fry is a wonderful experience that takes place only on the beach- its the perfect place to try out fresh fish, and bar hop.
We recommend Outriggers. Don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes.
10. PORT LUCAYA MARKETPLACE
The best way to describe Port Lucaya Marketplace is by calling it a village. This is the beating heart of Freeport, and definitely, a place that you should pop into on your Freeport excursions.
You’ll find rows of colorful shops filled with goodies to take home, restaurants with mouthwatering food. We recommend popping in there in the late afternoon/ early evening to walk around and grab dinner.
11. MANTA RAY BEACH
We’ll be honest, we loved the sunsets here first, but the food is good, and the atmosphere is lively so be sure to bring your camera or drone so you can capture some of the most magical sunsets on the planet.
